Tooth Colored Dental Fillings

If you have developed a cavity, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. At Wisdom Dental in Coral Springs, we are delighted to receive new patients and serve current patients with immediate appointments and gentle dentistry.

Understanding Dental Decay

Cavities result when bacteria interact with sugar or starches to form acid. The acids will gradually wear away your dental enamel. At first, you may simply develop small, white spots on your teeth. At this point, a thorough cleaning can typically reverse the damage to your teeth. However, these telltale spots do not always appear, and if the erosion process continues, the acid and bacteria will eventually affect the underlying layers of your tooth. Without proper care, the bacteria will spread. Eventually, the cavity could compromise your entire tooth. You might even develop gum disease or cavities in your adjacent teeth.

Many times, cavities go undiagnosed until patients experience a toothache, dental sensitivity, or striking discoloration. By this time, their tooth may be significantly damaged, or they may have developed a dental infection. Fortunately, with routine exams and cleanings, we can prevent dental decay. Even if you do develop a cavity, we can detect it early and treat it with a filling.

The Purpose of Dental Fillings

Fillings have a twofold purpose. First, when placing a filling, Dr. Wisdom or Dr. Mariel Petruk will clean your tooth to eliminate virtually all harmful bacteria. In this way, our dentist can prevent your cavity from growing and compromising your entire tooth. This will keep the bacteria from spreading to your other teeth and your nearby gum tissue. Second, a filling will strengthen the structure of your tooth. The composite will replace damaged dental material to restore your full oral function.

Types of Fillings

Tooth-colored composite fillings can be done on the spot in our dental office. Composite resin comes in a range of natural shades, and our dentists can select the color that matches the surrounding tooth structure. This way, when you smile and laugh, others will not see your fillings. In fact, you will not see them, even when you look up close in the mirror. Composite resin will bond with your tooth more strongly than metal. It also does not expand and contract with hot and cold foods and beverages. Therefore, it can strengthen your weakened tooth more effectively than silver amalgam and last a very long time.

Highly durable porcelain or gold fillings in the form of dental inlays and onlays can be custom made in our partnering dental lab. If you select one of these more expensive filling materials, your tooth will be prepped, an impression made, and a temporary filling placed while the lab creates your restoration. At a second appointment, the temporary filling will be removed, and your inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth.
Our dentist will check your bite to make sure your filling provides an optimal occlusal contact with the opposing teeth and will be comfortable when you bite and chew. The dentist will finely polish the filling and tooth structure to make needed adjustments.
