A dental crown (also called a “cap”) is a restoration that covers the entire visible part of the tooth above the gum line. It is used to preserve and strengthen a tooth that is fractured, has had root canal therapy, or has been significantly weakened by dental caries or a large filling. Crowns are also used for to attach a dental bridge and for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of a tooth’s surface or to modify the form of a poorly shaped tooth. In some cases, a crown may be used to improve the force and balance of your bite to treat temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD—also commonly known as “TMJ”), or to restore a tooth to normal size and function after the top of the tooth has become excessively worn due to malocclusion, stress clenching, or nighttime grinding (bruxism).

Porcelain Crowns

Crowns are typically made of all porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. The latter type is commonly referred to as a “PFM” crown. The type of crown you select with the advice of your dentist will have bearing on its cost, so we will discuss the advantages of each type with you and why one is recommended over another for your circumstances.

All-porcelain crowns offer the most lifelike appearance, but are not as strong as porcelain-on-metal crowns. They are usually reserved for the front teeth that show when you smile. Porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations have an outer porcelain coating that will closely resemble natural dental enamel and be color-matched to your smile. Another possibility is a newer, more expensive type of crown made of all zirconia or porcelain fused on zirconia. Zirconia crowns are very strong and lifelike. They are desirable when both durability and aesthetics are of prime importance.

Crowns Made Affordable

In addition to All Porcelain and Porcelain on Metal (PFM) crowns, Orange Grove Dental in New Port Richey offers “base” metal crowns, which are an affordable choice for back molars that are in need of restoration and for crown and bridge treatment to replace a lost tooth. The metal used is an alloy with large percentages of nickel, cobalt, chromium or beryllium. Some patients have an allergic sensitivity to these metals so your dentist will counsel you and assist you in making a decision that is right for you.

Tooth Restoration in Just Two Visits

All of our custom crowns are designed for optimal fit and function. Before placing a crown, your dentist will remove the tooth’s enamel to make room for the restoration. Your tooth and gums will be numbed before this procedure. We will make an impression of your mouth and models for our partnering lab that will make your crown. Our dentist will place a provisional (temporary) crown on your prepared tooth so you can function normally while waiting for your custom crown. When your crown is complete, you will return for your second appointment. At that time, the dentist will remove the provisional crown and permanently attach your custom crown. The dentist will check to make sure your bite (the way your teeth come together) is excellent. Because your crown will be custom fit for you, you can expect long lasting fine results.
